The general process for learning to drive is as follows:
- Apply for a provisional driving licence
- Find the right driving instructor to suit your needs
- Practical driving lessons
- Theory & hazard perception test
- Practical driving test
- Pass Plus/Motorway lessons
Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence
If you haven't yet applied for your provisional licence then you will find updated prices and requirements along with an online application at www.direct.gov.uk/provisional. The DVLA will aim to get your licence to you within 10 days of submitting a successful application.
Once you have received your provisional licence we would be delighted to get you out on your first driving lesson - we offer a 1 hour taster lesson for only £10.
Find the right Driving Instructor to suit your needs
Finding the right driving instructor is crucial to your success. 50% of our pupils have had a previous driving instructor and have decided to change to Monarch Driving School because they weren't happy with the service that they received. When surveyed the main reasons for dissatisfaction with their previous instructors were the following:
- The driving instructor stringing lessons out with no set objective or target date for driving test.
- Time wasted on driving lessons - stopping off at the shop/post box/toilet breaks.
- Unreliable instructors - Not showing up, poor time keeping, late for driving test appointments.
- Low lesson prices but bad quality service.
- The pupil not feeling comfortable with their instructor.
- Inappropriate behaviour/remarks by the driving instructor.
- Impatient driving instructor.

Practical Driving Lessons
Whether you are a complete beginner or have had lessons in the past then your instructor will tailor the lessons to suit your needs.
Things that we consider when planning your lesson are:
- What previous experience you have had (if any) and how we can draw on this to develop your skills as efficiently as possible
- An appropriate day and time for your lesson to suit your skills, experience and level of confidence.
- The objective of the lesson and how to ensure that we achieve it.
- The location of the lesson and routes used. The correct location is vital for us to meet the lesson objectives and familiarise you with the local area and test routes.
- The length of your lesson and what we can achieve with you in this time.
- Whether you have a target date in mind for taking your driving test.
If you are nervous then please don't worry - we do not put any of our pupils in situations that are inappropriate to their level of confidence and ability.
Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Passing your theory test is a milestone that we are keen for you to achieve. We will assist you in learning the theory and then applying it in practical driving situations so that you have a full and comprehensive understanding.
We provide each pupil with a free set of mock theory test papers and access to e-driving which is an online service that we use to train for the theory test.
Hazard perception DVDs are available to borrow from your Monarch Driving Instructor (a returnable deposit may need to be paid).
